Softball puts on a strong showing over weekend Fall Tournament


The preparation to defend their 2008 NCAA title continued for the Sun Devil Softball team this past weekend as they put on an impressive showing topping Palomar College twice and Central Arizona once as ASU outscored their opponents 49-2 over the weekend. Final scores on the weekend were 15-0 and 20-2 over Palomar College and 14-0 over Central Arizona.

Saturday saw the tournament kick-off full steam as the Sun Devils Sun Devils caught fire, compiling 17 hits, including five homeruns. Freshman Annie Lockwood led the charge going 3-for-3 with two homeruns, while fellow freshmen Katelyn Boyd and Christina Zambrana added a homerun each as well. Krista Donnenwirth also contributed two RBIʼs and went 3-for-3. In the circle, Megan Elliot was lights out as she pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and giving up only three hits. 

Next up, the Sun Devils continued their domination against Central Arizona with Hillary Bach throwing five shutout innings and allowing just four hits and striking out six. Megan Ellsworth also pitched two shutout innings and had two strikeouts, while giving up only one hit. The offense picked up right where it left off in the first game putting up 17 hits again and scoring nine runs in the first two innings. Jess Ware led off and went 4-for-4 and stole two bases and hit a run in. Kaitlin Cochran drove in two runs as well, and was 2-for-3.

On Sunday against Palomar the offensive dominance continued with ASU collecting 17 hits, including six homeruns. Kaitlin CochranDani Rae Lougheed and Katie Crabb also hit homeruns. was 2-for-3 with two homeruns and three RBIʼs while Katelyn Boyd, Christina Zambrana,

Hillary Bach took the mound to start the game and pitched two and two-third innings allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Next Megan Elliot came in and threw three shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out one. Megan Ellsworth closed out the game pitching one strikeout and allowing only one hit in one and one-third innings of work.

The Sun Devils will take the field again on Friday October 31 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Farrington Stadium when their fall season continues against Phoenix College before hosting the biggest Alumni Game event in program history and National Championship celebration on Saturday, November 1 from 3-7:30 p.m.
