Softball opens fall season with a bang
The Sun Devil Softball team kicked-off their fall season Saturday in preparation to gear up for their 2009 campaign to defend their National Championship. The Sun Devils topped Mount San Antonio College 14-1 and Yavapai College 15-1.
Against Mount SAC Megan Elliott took the mound and threw for six innings, giving up only one run and four hits while striking out two. The Sun Devil offense was lights out as usual, putting 14 runs on the board with 12 hits, including two home runs by Mandy Urfer and a career-first long ball from Jessica Mapes. Lesley Rogers also made a mark going 3-for-4 as well and Krista Donnenwirth added a run going 1-for-3 with a sac fly.
Against Yavapai, Hillary Bach took to the circle for her first appearance as a Sun Devil were she went five innings giving up only four hits and no runs as she struck out eight and remained nearly untouchable. Another new face, Megan Ellsworth threw for two innings and gave up one run on three hits. The offense posted 12 hits again, this time for 15 runs with home runs from newcomers Lexi Anderson and Kate Boyd wihle Lesley Rogers continued her tear with a triple. Kaitlin Cochran also launched a triple and went 2-for-3 to power ASU on to a 15-1 win.
The Sun Devils fall season will continue next week as they take on Cypress College on Thursday, October 9 at 2 p.m. in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.
