Softball flashes past UCSB
A windy and wild was in store for the No. 9 Sun Devil Softball team as they topped the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 10-2 in five innings Thursday night in Tempe. Hillary Bach collected the win to push her record to 5-0 on the season as ASU now holds an 11-2 record overall.
Hillary Bach took to the circle against the Gauchos, pitching four nearly perfect innings at Bach 10 speed before UCSB finally was able to post two runs on the sophomore righty, only one of them earned.
The Sun Devil offense came out to play early on behind Bach as they gave her a five run cushion in the first inning, with Krista Donnenwirth shaking off the rust and colleting her first hit of the 2010 season with a home run deep to right center to bring home two. Caylyn Carlson joined the rust-shaking shenanigans as she lined one to left field to plate two more runs before Lesley Rogers helped close out the five-run inning with a bases-loaded walk.
With both teams keeping a low profile through the next three innings, UCSB rattled the cage a bit in the fifth inning as they squeaked out a few hits to push two across, only one earned after a Sun Devil blooper.
ASU answered the call in the bottom of the inning though as they fired up the two-out lightning with a RBI double from Caylyn Carlson and a two-run pinch-hit home run from Christina Zambrana before a walk to Lesley Rogers was hit home to end it by Katelyn Boyd who launched her eighth home run of the season to cap it at a 10-2 final.
The Sun Devils take to the Farrington Stadium field again tomorrow as they open the 2010 Wilson/DiMarini Invitational with games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Games begin at 9 a.m. in Tempe.
