Softball caps sweep of South Dakota State

Another 5 inning game capped the weekend at Farrington Stadium as seventh-ranked Sun Devil softball squad pulled out their third win of the weekend and eighth consecutive win as they swept the three game series against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits with a 9-1 Sunday afternoon in Tempe. The win puts ASU 21-4 overall on the season while SDSU drops to 3-15.

The third inning brought out the ASU bats, scoring seven of their nine runs with five hits coming from Mandy Urfer, Renee Welty and Taylor Haro, all of which collected two RBI’s apiece in the game, as well as hits by Michelle Nulliner and Katelyn Boyd. With the seven run lead, freshman hurler, Megan Ellsworth was sitting pretty after three innings of play as she settled in to quiet the Jackrabbit bats.

Katie Crabb would score ASU's final run of the game on a bases-loaded walk by Jessica Ware to cap of the win in the fourth inning. Also chalking up an RBI was Taylor Haro, who singled to the shortstop to score Clarissa Andorfer-Lopez. Although the Jackrabbits responded in the top of the fifth inning scoring one run, it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the lead the Sun Devils had built as Megan Ellsworth shut down the rest of the line-up to earn her fifth win of the season.

The Sun Devils will continue their season, Thursday March 12th at 9:00am, as they take on the New Mexico Lobos to open the Judi Garman Classic. Games run Thursday through Sunday in Fullerton, Calif.
