Soccer defeated by California in overtime

Despite another strong effort, the Arizona State women’s soccer remained winless in Pac-10 play following a 3-2 overtime loss at California on Sunday.<separator></separator>After an exhausting defeat at Stanford on Friday, the Sun Devils found themselves with just enough to keep pace with California (10-7-1, 4-4-0 Pac-10) until Golden Bears junior Lisa Kevorkian ended the contest by scoring the winning goal off a header 7:36 into overtime. For ASU (7-7-3, 0-6-1 Pac-10), the loss was its third in overtime this season, all of which have come in conference play and all on the road. “After Stanford ran us all over the field for 90 minutes on Friday, we just lost our legs and they kept coming at us and they ultimately got that goal in overtime,” ASU head coach <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/boyd_kevin00.html">Kev… Boyd</a> said following the game. “This is the Pac-10 and there is very little separation between us and a number of teams in the conference. We have played four overtime games [in Pac-10 play] play and we are 0-3-1 in those games. We are just not finding a way to get it done.” The Sun Devils had the lead in the early going after redshirt freshman forward <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/tinnin_courtney00.html… Tinnin</a> scored in the seventh minute to give ASU a 1-0 lead. For Tinnin, who is now second on the team in points with 13, it marked the third consecutive game in which she scored a goal for the Sun Devils. After ASU’s quick score, the Golden Bears would tie the game and take the lead in a span of less than 10 minutes. Junior forward Alex Morgan’s 12th goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 in the eighth minute and in the 16th minute California would take the lead when senior midfielder Katie Oakes scored on a penalty kick. The Sun Devils began the second half with a flurry of activity on the offensive end and would tie the game at 2-2 in the 54th minute when junior midfielder <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/elston_alexandra00.htm… Elston</a> scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season. “In the second half we responded and came out very hard and got all over them and found a goal to tie it at 2-2,” Boyd said. “Towards the end of the second half our legs just started going. I could see that we were holding on and then we got into overtime and were trying to make our legs go. We just didn’t have much left in the tank.” The Sun Devils close out the regular season next weekend when they host Oregon State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and Oregon on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
