Sandys and Grant complete first day of decathlon at Pac-10 Multis

The 2009 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships got underway at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday afternoon with two members of the Arizona State University program competing in the decathlon. Through the first five events of the 10-event competition, Jamie Sandys stands 12th overall with 3,234 points while Duggan Grant is 13th overall with 3,184 points.

Sandys recorded personal-best marks in all five events and scored nine points more than his previous best first-day total recorded earlier this season. He opened the day with a time of 11.56 in the 100m dash to score 740 points and stand 12th overall before scoring 630 points in the long jump with a 12th-place mark of 6.20m (20-04.25). Remaining 12th overall, Sandys then hit a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 10.24m (33-07.25) to add 500 points to his overall total before clearing 1.83m (6-00.00) for 653 points in the high jump. After running 52.31 in the 400m dash for 711 points, Sandys brought his total to 3,234 points for the day to stand in 12th.

Grant, in his first decathlon of the season, opened the day in 13th place overall with a time of 11.91 in the 100m dash for 669 points before placing sixth overall in the long jump with a mark of 6.61m (21-08.25) to move up to 11th overall. In the shot put, he recorded a mark of 9.29m (30-05.75) to fall back to 13th place before clearing 1.83m (6-00.00) in the high jump for another 653 points. In the 400m dash, he ran 52.67 to bring his first-day total to 3,184 points.

The decathlon concludes on Sunday. The Sun Devil team will make its way to Eugene next weekend to compete in the remaining events of the Pac-10 Championships on Saturday and Sunday (May 16-17).
