Robles places seventh at 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships
Final Standings and Brackets (pdf)
Anthony Robles captured seventh place at 125 pounds and earned his second-consecutive All-America honors as the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships came to a close Saturday night inside the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
As a team, the Sun Devils score 19.5 points and finished 30th overall in the finals standings. Iowa ran away with the team crown with 134.5 point and was followed in the Top 4 by Cornell (90.0), Iowa State (75.0) and Wisconsin (70.5). Those four teams earned trophies at the event.
Robles, who’s only loses in the tournament came to the national runner-up and the fourth-place finisher, took on unseeded Nikko Triggas of Ohio State in the seventh place match and won with a 9-3 decision. The fourth-seeded Robles opened the match with a first-period takedown and added two near-fall points to hold a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second, Robles had choice and took bottom where he reversed Triggas before the Buckeye escaped to make it 6-1 through two. In the final stanza, Triggas chose top and Robles again scored on a reverse before adding an escape after Triggas reversed Robles to end the scoring.
With his All-America award, Robles is the first Sun Devil to earn back-to-back accolades since the 2005 and 2006 championships when both current assistant coach Brian Stith (157 pounds) and heavyweight Cain Velasquez accomplished the same distinction.
The end of the NCAA event also marks the end of the collegiate season.
