Robles, Jenkins selected to compete at 45th NWCA All-Star Classic

<p>Arizona State University wrestlers <a href="/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/robles_anthony00.html"><span style="color: #444444;">Anthony Robles</span></a> and <a href="/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/jenkins_bubba00.html"><span style="color: #444444;">Bubba Jenkins</span></a>, both of whom are entering their senior seasons, have been selected to compete in the 45th National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic presented by The Marines, the Association announced today. The Classic will be held on Sunday, November 21, at the Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., and will feature 10 matches pitting some of the top wrestlers in the nation against one another.</p><separator></separator><p>Robles, ranked No. 5 by WIN Magazine, will meet No. 3 Zach Sanders (Minnesota) in the 125-pound match while Jenkins, ranked No. 4, will meet fellow Pac-10 foe and top-ranked Adam Hall (Boise State) at 157 pounds. All matches at the Classic are exhibition and do not count toward a wrestler’s season and career records. With their inclusion, Robles and Jenkins are two of six Pac-10 wrestlers in the event, joining BSU’s Hall, Andrew Hochstrasser (133) and Kirk Smith (184) and Stanford’s Nick Amuchastegui (174).</p><separator></separator><p>While Jenkins and Hall will be meeting on the mat for the first time, Robles and Sanders will renew a rivalry that stands with each wrestler winning one match each over the other. The first meeting came in the semifinal of the 2008 Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational with the Golden Gopher taking a 7-3 decision. Later that year, in the consolation semifinal round of the NCAA Championships, Robles scored a 19-10 major decision victory en route to placing fourth at the national event and earning the first All-America honor of his career.</p><separator></separator><p>With their selections, Robles and Jenkins become the 20th and 21st different Sun Devils to compete in the prestigious event, respectively. Prior to this year, the last time a Sun Devil competed in the Classic came in 2007 as current assistant coach <a href="/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/stith_brian00.html"><span style="color: #444444;">Brian Stith</span></a> dropped a close 2-1 decision to then-top-ranked Trent Paulson (Iowa State) at the event being held in Dallas, Texas.</p><separator></separator><p>Overall, the Sun Devils hold an all-time record of 9-12-1 in the Classic with four earning selections but not competing because of injury or withdrawing. The last time a Sun Devil won at the exhibition came in 2000 when <a href="/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/blackford_steve00.html"><span style="color: #444444;">Steve Blackford</span></a> won a 13-2 major decision over Kirk White of Boise State in the 165-pound division.</p><separator></separator><p>Before Robles and Jenkins get to the All-Star Classic, however, they will have several events with the rest of their Sun Devil teammates first, including this weekend’s opening dual action on the road. ASU opens its 2010-11 campaign in Phoenix on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a dual at Grand Canyon (#7 NCAA Division II) before heading up the road to Prescott to face Embry-Riddle (#10 NAIA) in a 7 p.m. dual. The road trips will be ASU’s second and first trips, respectively, to each of their intrastate opponents.</p><separator></separator><p><strong>45th NWCA All-Star Classic presented by The Marines</strong><br />November 21, 2010 • Selland Arena (Fresno, Calif.)<br /><em>rankings are from W.I.N.
