Robles closes out regular season perfect as ASU falls at SU

Three members of the Arizona State University wrestling team won their final regular season matches, but the team fell in the final dual of the year as host Stanford won 7-of-10 matches to take a 28-11 score on Sunday afternoon inside Burnham Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to a final record of 5-13 (1-4 Pac-10) while the Cardinal ended the year with a 9-9-1 record (4-2 Pac-10).

The dual opened at 141 pounds with Josh Sandoval dropping a 10-5 decision to Jordan Gray to put the hosts ahead, 3-0. The lead grew to 7-0 after the 149 match as Carlos Castro lost a 14-3 major decision to Donovan Halpin. SU’s lead grew to 13-0 after ASU forfeited the 157 match.

At 165, Te Edwards put the Sun Devils on the board as he won a hard-fought 6-2 decision over Lucas Espericueta, bringing the team score to 13-3. But, the Cardinal won the next three matches, including a forfeit at 174 (19-3) and a 3-2 win for Spence Patrick at 184 over ASU’s Jake Meredith (22-3). SU also won a 10-3 decision at 197 as No. 15 Zack Giesen downed Luke Macchiaroli to bring the team score to 25-3.

Levi Cooper was up next at heavyweight and won a close, 2-1, decision in the tiebreaker to give ASU three more points before No. 1 Anthony Robles took five more points for the Sun Devils with his 18-1 technical fall over Matt Sencenbaugh at 125. With the win, Robles ended the regular season with a 28-0 record and 21 wins by technical falls on the year.

The dual came to a close at 133 pounds as No. 16 Justin Paulsen won an 8-2 decision over Kalin Goodsite, bringing the final score to 28-11.

With the close of the dual at SU, the Sun Devils’ regular season has come to a close. The next action for the Sun Devils will come on February 27 in Corvallis, Ore., as they compete in the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships, hosted by Oregon State. The meet will be used to select those that will qualify for the NCAA Championships later in March.
