Pilecka Wins Singles Draw at June Stewart Invitational
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Arizona State Women's Tennis team wrapped up the June Stewart Invitational on Sunday with senior Wendy Pilecka playing in the last match of the day as she won the Dr. Jim Gray Draw in straight sets against Alaina Trgovich 6-3, 6-3.
Pilecka at the end of the match stated, "I was very nervous at the end of the match but it really was an excellent way to cap off a successful weekend by the whole team. It's just great to compete again," she said as she sat amongst her teammates.
The rest of the team can boast the same achievement. The Sun Devils won four of the five singles matches in straight sets, with impressive performances by freshmen Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein, who also beat Kentucky opponents to end in third place in their respective draws.
In doubles, Pilecka and Hein beat a solid Kentucky team in a hard-fought battle of aggressive play. The Devils came from behind after being down 7-5 to eventually serve it out to win 9-7. Mckenna and senior Jessica Leitch quickly disposed of Julianna McMeen and Erin Clark to win 8-1.
Head coach Sheila McInerney was very pleased with the overall performance of her team. "I thought everyone played really well and more importantly, we competed great. It was a very good weekend for the team and will help us down the road," she said.
The team returns to Tempe tonight and will begin preparation for the ASU Thunderbird which takes place from November 2 - 4 at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Thunderbird will conclude the Devils' fall schedule.
