Nordqvist and Munoz place in top three at 2008 World Amateur Team Championship
Members of the Arizona State women's golf team showcased their world-class talent at the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship held at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia. Junior Anna Nordqvist of Sweden and senior Azahara Munoz of Spain both placed in the top three while incoming freshman Carlota Ciganda, also playing for Spain, placed just out of the top 10. Sweden won the tournament at 19-under 561 (137-138-147-139) and Spain placed second at 7-under 573 (145-138-150-140).
Nordqvist finished second behind Swedish teammate Caroline Hedwall. Nordqvist finished one shot off Hedwall. Nordqvist shot a 3-under 69 in the final round to cumulate 9-under 281 (70-68-74-69). Nordqvist tied for 14th at the 2006 World Amateur held in Cape Town, South Africa.
Like she did at the 2006 World Amateur, Munoz placed third. The reigning NCAA Champion shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to move up from fifth to third. Munoz recorded a 3-under 287 (71-72-74-70) over the four round tournament.
Munoz's Spanish and Sun Devil teammate Carlota Ciganda carded a par 72 in the final round. The incoming freshman earned a 1-over 291 (75-66-78-72) to finish in a three way tie for 11th.
ASU junior Juliana Murcia shot a 6-over 78 in the final round. At 16-over 306 (78-76-74-78), Bogotá, Colombia native finished the tournament tied for 57th. Incoming freshman Giulia Molinaro tied for 76th at 19-over 309 (76-79-78-76).
The Sun Devils will head to Auburn, Ala., to compete in The Derby Invitational held at the Auburn University Golf Club. The tournament begins October 24 and will conclude on October 26.
