Newman helps baseball edge San Diego in 11th innings

May 05, 2009

Matt Newman emerged the hero on Tuesday, getting the game-winning hit and earning the victory on the mound as the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team rallied to defeat San Diego 8-7 in 11 innings in front of a crowd of 2,923 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 34-11 on the season with the win.

Newman pitched the 10th and 11th innings, allowing one hit and no runs, after spending the first nine innings playing right field. He then ended the game with a single in the bottom of the 11th to give ASU its first walk-off win since Game One of the 2007 Tempe Super Regional against Mississippi.

The Sun Devils trailed 7-3 in the middle of the seventh, but they chipped away with a run in the bottom of the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings.

Zack MacPhee proved instrumental in the ASU rally, as he hit a solo home run in the eighth and then had the game-tying single with the Sun Devils down to their last out in the ninth.

After MacPhee's solo home run in the eighth, Drew Maggi tripled and then came home on an infield single by Jason Kipnis. In the ninth, Jared MacDonald singled to lead off the inning, and then after two strikeouts, Newman walked and MacPhee brought MacDonald home to tie the game.

In the 11th, Arizona State put runners on the corners with one out and Newman at the plate. Newman notched a victory for the Sun Devils and for himself, with an infield single that scored Mike Leake from third.

Kole Calhoun had a solo home run while Carlos Ramirez added three hits in the victory.

Jason Franzblau started and got a no decision, going six innings and allowing only two earned runs with seven strikeouts.

The Sun Devils and Toreros finish out their brief two-game series on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
