Newman helps baseball edge San Diego in 11th innings


<p> <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/newman_matt00.html">Ma… Newman</a> emerged the hero on Tuesday, getting the game-winning hit and earning the victory on the mound as the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team rallied to defeat San Diego 8-7 in 11 innings in front of a crowd of 2,923 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 34-11 on the season with the win.</p><separator></separator><p>Newman pitched the 10th and 11th innings, allowing one hit and no runs, after spending the first nine innings playing right field. He then ended the game with a single in the bottom of the 11th to give ASU its first walk-off win since Game One of the 2007 Tempe Super Regional against Mississippi.</p><separator></separator><p>The Sun Devils trailed 7-3 in the middle of the seventh, but they chipped away with a run in the bottom of the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings.<a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/macphee_zack00.html"><… href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/macphee_zack00.html">Z… MacPhee</a> proved instrumental in the ASU rally, as he hit a solo home run in the eighth and then had the game-tying single with the Sun Devils down to their last out in the ninth.</p><separator></separator><p>After MacPhee's solo home run in the eighth, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/maggi_drew00.html">Drew Maggi</a> tripled and then came home on an infield single by <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/kipnis_jason00.html">J… Kipnis</a>. In the ninth, Jared MacDonald singled to lead off the inning, and then after two strikeouts, Newman walked and MacPhee brought MacDonald home to tie the game.</p><separator></separator><p>In the 11th, Arizona State put runners on the corners with one out and Newman at the plate.
