NCAA women's golf championships halt due to high winds
Round two of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship brought high winds that suspended play as No. 4 Arizona State remained in fourth place of the teams that were able to finish the second round, shooting a 15-over 591 (290-301). The Sun Devils are currently seven strokes behind leaders USC and UCLA. Denver currently holds the third position at 11-over 587.
"We survived the day being only seven shots out," says head coach Melissa Luellen. "The good news is that there are two days of competition left."
The inclement weather caused two separate delays, with the first delay lasting over two hours and the second causing the competition to halt for the day. Play at the NCAA Championships held in Albuquerque, N.M. at the 6,424-yard, par-72 University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course, will resume tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. The updated championship format begins Thursday with the conclusion of the second round starting at 7 a.m. MT. The third round will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. The finals are slated to revert back to the original schedule with tee times starting in the morning and concluding in the afternoon.
"We came across a bit of bad luck with the leaders getting to finish their round before the first delay," says Luellen, "We were one shot out of the lead before the delay and ended the day seven shots back."
Azahara Munoz was the Sun Devils leader for the second consecutive day. Currently in second place, the junior All-American shot an even 72 in the second round, bringing her tournament total through day two to 3-under 141 (69-72).
Sophomore Anna Nordqvist moved ahead from the previous round. The returning All-American has shot a 4-over 148 (75-73) over the two days. Junior All-American Jennifer Osborn finished out round two with a 5-over 77 to bring her two day total to 6-over 150 (73-77).
"I'm proud of the way the team competed," said Luellen. "The conditions were difficult and will continue to be difficult but there is a lot of golf left."
