McGrath leads water polo to edge over Northridge
Behind five goals from senior Addison McGrath, the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team defeated No. 14 CS Northridge 10-9 at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday. The Sun Devils improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, after beating Colorado State earlier in the day.
McGrath's five goals tied for the second-highest single-game total in program history, behind only the seven goals she scored against Hawai'i on Feb. 20, 2008, and it was her school-record 50th career multiple-goal game.
She was joined in the scoring column by junior Bonnie Miles and sophomores Bonnie Miles, Lynlee Smith, Sam Schubert and Nikki Unbehaun. Smith and Schubert have now scored goals in each of their first two collegiate games.
Freshman goalie Dana Harvey also collected 11 saves in the win.
After never trailing in their first game on Saturday, the Sun Devils fell behind 3-2 to the Matadors after the first quarter. They still trailed by one at the half, but they came back to take an 8-7 lead after the third quarter. In a tight fourth quarter, Miles scored the go-ahead goal with just over a minute remaining as ASU went on to secure the 10-9 victory.
The Sun Devils return to action tomorrow, when they face Bucknell at 11:15 a.m. EST in their final game of the Michigan Invitational. The Bison are 0-2 on the season after losing 17-0 to No. 3 UCLA and 14-5 to No. 7 San Jose State on Saturday.
