Marrero leads baseball in BYU sweep

Deven Marrero had a home run and four RBI to lead the No. 2 Arizona State University baseball team to a 7-2 win over BYU on Tuesday in front of 3,109 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 41-5 on the season with the victory.

Marrero was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the fourth and a two-run triple in the eighth to lead the Sun Devil offensive attack. Drew Maggi, Johnny Ruettiger and Raoul Torrez also had two hits each in the victory.

Merrill Kelly started and went three innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run with two strikeouts, but he left on a pitch count and took a no decision. Jake Borup came on from the bullpen to earn the win and improve to 10-1 on the season. Borup went the middle three innings, giving up five hits and one unearned run. Mitchell Lambson, Jake Barrett and Jordan Swagerty combined to pitch the final three innings, striking out seven and not allowing a hit.

BYU took the lead in the first with a run scored on a balk by Kelly, but the Sun Devils tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Maggi. ASU then took the lead in the fourth, as Raoul Torrez had a run-scoring single and then Marrero followed him up with a two-run shot to left.

The Cougars scored a run in the fifth to make it 4-2, but ASU would get the run back in the sixth when Riccio Torrez scored on an error. Marrero then capped off the scoring with a triple to the right field corner in the eighth that scored both Ruettiger and Raoul Torrez.

The Sun Devils return to Pac-10 Conference action on Saturday, as they begin a three-game series with Arizona at Sancet Stadium in Tucson.
