Luellen named coach of the year by Golfweek


The 2009 NCAA Championship Women's Golf team continues to rake in the hardware as Golfweek Magazine announced their end of the year awards. Head coach Melissa Luellen, along with four Sun Devils were honored by the weekly publication.

Head coach Melissa Luellen, who has previously been named National Coach of the Year by the NGCA along with Pac-10 Coach of the Year, was named Golfweek's Coach of the Year. Luellen helped lead her team to six tournament finishes, including a perfect postseason as the team claimed the program's seventh NCAA title and first since 1998. The Sun Devils NCAA title marked Luellen's first in her coaching career.

Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Munoz, the Sun Devils own Spanish Armada, were awarded with first-team All-American accolades. Ciganda won two events during her freshman campaign while Munoz was the Sun Devils top finisher at the NCAA Championships. Both ended the 2009 season ranked in the top five. Additionally, Ciganda was named to the All-Freshman team.

Juliana Murcia received second-team All-American accolades. Murcia was one of the most improved players at the NCAA Championships. She finished the season ranked in the top 20 in both polls and earned her first tournament win of her collegiate career at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Jennifer Osborn wrapped up her collegiate career with third-team All-American honors from Golfweek. Osborn had seven top 20 finishes her senior season.
