Leake and Stevens named ASU Athletes of the Week
Baseball player Mike Leake and Track and Field athlete Sarah Stevens have been named ASU's Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 7. Both have displayed outstanding athleticism in their respective sports in the past week.
Thursday night Mike Leake and the Sun Devils faced off with the Missouri Tigers and Kyle Gibson in a highly anticipated match-up of two of the top pitchers in the nation. Leake outdueled his Team USA teammate, carrying a no-hitter through seven innings before surrendering a hit in the top of the eighth. The Junior shook it off, striking out the side to give him 10 Ks on the night. He improved to 2-0 on the year, thanks to his eight innings of 1 hit, shut out ball. He walked only one man, while fanning 10 Tigers in the 2-1 ASU victory.
Sarah Stevens won the MPSF Indoor Championship title in the shot put for the fourth year in a row after capturing the weight throw for the third year in a row, giving her a sweep of the two throwing events at the indoor meet for the third year in a row. This year, the senior won the weight throw on day one with a toss of 21.58m (70-09.75), just one centimeter off from her own national-leading mark, before coming back the next day to win the shot put with a heave of 17.13m (56-02.50).
