Kipnis named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Arizona State junior OF Jason Kipnis has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week, the conference announced today. It's the second time in his career that Kipnis has won the award and marks the second straight year a Sun Devil won the award on Opening Weekend. It is also the 90th time a Sun Devil has won a weekly award from the conference.
In addition to the conference award, Kipnis was also named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. This is the first national award for Kipnis.
Kipnis was nearly unstoppable during the opening weekend for Arizona State, reaching base his first 10 trips to the plate. The Northbrook, Ill., native was 12-for-17 and finished with a .706 batting average (.762 OBP). Kipnis led the Sun Devils to a four-game sweep over Wisconsin-Milwaukee by slugging a whopping 1.588 percent, aided by three home runs, four doubles and a triple. Two of his home runs came in the first game of a doubleheader, his third career multi-homer game. He also drove in eight runs, drew four walks and stole two bases for the Devils.
Kipnis and the Devils host the #15 Missouri Tigers tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
