Harris wins all-around as Sun Devils post season-high score
On a rare Wednesday meet, Arizona State women's gymnastics team recorded a season-best score of 196.150. Even with the season-best, the No. 20 Sun Devils fell to the No. 10 Oregon State Beavers who had a total score of 196.475. Nicole Harris won the all-around with a season-best 39.400. Tiana Jean and Francesca Mercurio also competed in the all-around with both achieving career-best scores of 39.175 and 38.900 respectively. Ashlee Hinkle also had a career-night for the Gym Devils as the junior posted two career-bests on vault and floor and a season-best beam score.
In the first rotation, the Sun Devils had six solid landings on the vault. Junior Ashlee Hinkle led the Sun Devils taking first place with a career-best of a 9.9. Three Sun Devils had scores of 9.825, Mercurio, Beaté Jones, and Nicole Harris. The score of 9.825 marked Mercurio and Jones' career-best. Freshman Mary Atkinson hit her routine with a solid 9.775 and Jean finished with a career-high score of a 9.75. The Sun Devils had a season-high vault score total of 49.150 to beat out the Beavers score of 49.125.
The Sun Devils struggled a bit on bars in the second rotation. The Sun Devils recorded a team total of 48.7. Harris led the Sun Devils with a solid routine taking second place with a 9.875. Atkinson was next highest scoring Sun Devil finishing with a career-high of 9.825 placing third. Jean stuck her landing after a clean routine resulting with a solid 9.8. Jones and Mercurio each scored a 9.6. Oregon State totaled a 49.025.
The Sun Devils stuck all six routines on the beam ending with a solid total of 49.125. Hinkle shined on beam, placing second with a clean, solid routine to lead the team with a score a 9.875. Harris and Orlando hit their routines each scoring 9.85. Orlando's score of 9.85 ties her career-best. Two Sun Devils had scores of 9.775, Kaitlynn Bormann and Mercurio for her career-best. Jean scored a 9.7. The Sun Devils took first on beam as Oregon State had a 49.1.
Finishing on floor, the Sun Devils performed six crowd-pleasing routines to score a season-high total of 49.175. Hinkle and Jean nailed their routines leading the Sun Devils each scoring their season-highs of high 9.875 tying with three Oregon State competitors for first place. Harris followed scoring a 9.85 after a solid routine. Jones hit her routine scoring her career-best of a 9.825. Brittany Schuett scored a 9.75 and Mercurio a 9.7. Oregon State had a floor total of 49.225.
The Sun Devils host the Arizona Wildcats Friday February 15 at Wells Fargo Arena. The meet begins at 7 p.m.
