Gold defeats Maroon in Annual Swimming Intersquad


The Arizona State swimming and diving team hosted their annual Maroon versus Gold Intersquad on Saturday October 18 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. After a day full of strong swims and friendly intersquad competition, Gold ultimately defeated Maroon 110-104, with the women's gold team winning 61-58 and the men's 40-46.

Some of the highlighted swims of the day included swims by junior flier Ashton Aubry, senior Sean Boyle and freshmen Sasha Stephens and Penelope Yamauchi. Aubry, swimming for the Gold team, handily won both the butterfly events, clocking times of 2:03.75 in the 200 fly and 56.64 in the 100 fly.

Boyle looks to make a statement in his senior season as he put up several good swims in the men's first event of the year. Clocking in a time of 1:41.73, Boyle handily won the 200 freestyle for the Gold team. Max Laney also tallied key points for the Gold team by winning the 200 IM in 1:56.03. He and Ante Cvitkovic of the Maroon team also went one and two in the 200 back with Cvitkovic pulling out the win. Cvitkovic clocked in a time of 1:51.71 while Laney touched the wall in 1:53.55. Sophomore Alex Hier also had a solid time of 1:53.51 in the 200 fly for the Maroon team.

Stephens again had a solid day. The freshman backstroker again won the 200 back touching in at 2:02.73, bettering her time of 2:03.13. Yamauchi, who won the 200 breast and 200 IM against Kansas, showed off her versatility taking first in both the 500 free (5:01.49) and the 400 IM (4:21.82).

The women's team heads to Dallas next week for a dual and an invitational. The Sun Devils will take on the SMU Mustangs on Thursday night and compete in the SMU Classic on Friday and Saturday.
