Four Sun Devil wrestlers earn Pac-10 academic honors

The Pac-10 Conference announced its winter sport academic teams last week with four members of the Arizona State University wrestling team garnering honors from the Conference, including one wrestler on the first team and three on the second team. Student-athletes are eligible for the academic honors by carrying a 3.0 grade-point average while also being a starter or significant contributor to their team during the season.

Junior Chris Drouin led the way for the Sun Devils this season as he garnered his third-consecutive selection to the Conference’s academic teams and his first selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team. In the previous two years, the Conference honored Drouin as a member of the All-Academic Second Team. Drouin completed his third season on the mats for the Sun Devils by advancing to his third-consecutive NCAA tournament at 141 pounds.

Vicente Varela, Michael Hawkins and Michael Swigart all were selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team with Hawkins and Swigart earning their first honors from the Conference. Varela is making his second appearance on the lists after being selected to the honorable mention list one year ago.
