Flawless Sun Devils sweep Aggies

The No. 21 Sun Devil Women's Tennis team wrapped up a flawless opening weekend on Sunday, shutting out the UC Davis Aggies 7-0.

In doubles, No. 3 Kelcy McKenna and partner Ali Van Horne defeated Aggies Jenna Kappel and Sidney Brady 8-1. Sisters Laila and Nadia AbdalaSianna Simmons and Ashlee Brown gave an intense effort against Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio conquering them 8-4 to wrap up a perfect doubles outing. took an early lead over Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone, but battled it out to win 8-4.

Singles action saw the Devils remain flawless as Nadia Abdala overpowered Desiree Stone 6-0, 6-0 and Ali Van Horne also kept her opponent Jessica Harris scoreless 6-0, 6-0. Sianna Simmons was also vanquished opponent Dahra Zamudio 6-1, 6-1.

Their fellow Devils followed suit and kept the team untouchable, with Kelcy McKenna, Ashlee Brown and Laila Abdala winning their matches in only two sets.

Coach Sheila McInerney said the weekend, which saw them also sweep NAU 7-0 on Saturday, helped the team build the confidence they would need for the tough schedule ahead. "It's nice to start with two teams that you know you should beat," McInerney said. "It gets the jitters out which is good because it will only get tougher ahead."

The Sun Devils will head to Atlanta, Ga. on Thursday for two days of practice, before taking on Florida State on Saturday, January 31 at 9:00 a.m. ET.
