Event gives voice to ‘crimes of silence'

April 20, 2007

Rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and domestic violence are often labeled “crimes of silence.” Help others break the silence and raise awareness at the “Take Back the Night” event April 23 at ASU's Polytechnic campus in southeastern Mesa. A candle ceremony and speakers are planned.

The schedule of events on April 23 includes:

• 5:30 p.m., Student Union South Patio – light refreshments and information fair.

• 6 p.m., Cooley Ballrooms – presentation on domestic violence and sexual assault by Wanda Tucker-Hicks; two survivors speak out; and keynote speaker Foula Dimopoulos.

• 7 p.m., Student Union South Patio – candle ceremony begins.

• 8 p.m., Cooley Ballrooms – debrief for men, women and families.

Child care will be provided during the program, and families are encouraged to participate. The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Louise Welter at (480) 727-1255 or louise.welter@asu.edu.
