Drouin upsets Humphrey, but Ohio State downs wrestling

No. 16 C… Drouin scored a huge upset victory over his previously undefeated and top-ranked opponent and No. 3 <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/robles_anthony00.html"… Robles continued his winning ways, but it was not enough as the No. 22 Arizona State University wrestling team dropped a 32-7 decision to No. 3 Ohio State in the first round of competition at the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday afternoon inside the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to 4-3 on the season while the Buckeyes improved to 9-0.
<separator></separator>
“The team gave a great effort in the dual today and it was a good test for us to be able to go out and face No. 3 Ohio State to see where we are as a team,” Head Coach … Charles said following the dual. “We know we need to get better and we are showing improvement and that is all I can ask of the team. We are going to get ready to face Wisconsin and try to remain in this tournament and continue to work to improve.”
<separator></separator>
Drouin, who dropped a major decision on the road last weekend, rebounded in a big way in his match at 141 pounds as he came out as the aggressor throughout the match and took the fight the No. 1-ranked Reese Humphrey. Despite pushing the action, Drouin’s lone score came in the third period on an escape just as Humphrey had done in the second period. With a distinct advantage in shots and offensive moves, Drouin continued to push, but no scoring took place and the match went into overtime. In the one-minute period, Drouin again stalked Humphrey and eventually blasted through on a double-leg attempt and finished the shot with two points for the takedown and a 3-1 win. Drouin’s win handed Humphrey, the 2009 NCAA runner-up at 133 pounds, his first loss of the year (18-1).
<separator></separator>
Prior to Drouin’s win, two other matches were held with ASU splitting with OSU. First up was Robles at 125 pounds, who used his speed and strength to overwhelm No. 18 Nikko Triggas before winning an 11-1 major decision and putting ASU in the team lead, 4-0. The Sun Devils maintained the lead after 133 where Ben Ashmore dropped a close 5-3 decision to Ian Paddock and built on the lead with Drouin’s win, putting ASU on top, 7-3, through 141.
<separator></separator>
But, as quickly as the jubilation for Drouin’s upset victory began, it was brought to a halt at 149 as No. 3 Lance Palmer pinned ASU’s <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/varela_vicente00.html"… Varela in 1:13 to put the Buckeyes on top, 9-7 and start a string of seven-consecutive wins to run away with the team victory. At 157, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/swigart_michael00.html… Swigart held an early lead but could not find more points in the match as he fell, 5-2, to Tony Jameson. OSU then won the next three matches with their highly-ranked wrestlers in the line-up, including a 12-3 major decision at 165, a 3-2 decision for No. 19 David Rella over Er… Starks and a fall in 2:02 at 184 pounds. OSU added an 8-0 major decision at 197 before No. 13 Erik Nye lost a close 3-2 decision to OSU’s Corey Morrison at heavyweight for the final margin of victory.
<separator></separator>
The Sun Devils will be back on the mats in Cedar Falls at 3 p.m. CT today as they face No. 18 Wisconsin. The winner will advance to take on the loser of the No. 6 Minnesota vs. No. 5 Central Michigan quarterfinal while the loser of the ASU-UW match is eliminated from the tournament.
<separator></separator>
#3 Ohio State (9-0) def. #22 Arizona State (4-3), 32-7
UNI Dome • Cedar Falls, Iowa • NWCA National Duals
125 - #3 <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/robles_anthony00.html"… Robles (AS) major #18 Nikko Triggas, 11-1
133 - Ian Paddock (OS) dec. Ben Ashmore, 5-3
141 - #16 C… Drouin (AS) dec. #1 Reece Humphrey, 3-1 sv
149 - #3 Lance Palmer (OS) pinned <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/varela_vicente00.html"… Varela, 1:13
157 - Tony Jameson (OS) dec. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/swigart_michael00.html… Swigart, 5-2
165 - #7 Colt Sponseller (OS) major K… DeBerry, 12-3
174 - #19 David Rella (OS) dec. Er… Starks, 3-2
184 - #8 Mike Pucillo (OS) pinned … Meredith, 2:02
197 - Cody Magrum (OS) major A… Pike, 8-0
285 - Corey Morrison (OS) dec. #13 Erik Nye, 3-2
<separator></separator>
NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals - Team Results
First Round
#1 Iowa def. #15 Nebraska, 33-4
#9 Boise State def.
