Dive and women's swimming to defend titles at Pac-10 Championships

Pac-10 Championship Central

With four returning Pac-10 Champions looking to defend their conference titles, the Arizona State women’s swimming and women’s and men’s diving teams head to Washington to compete in the 2011 Pac-10 women’s swimming Championships, Feb. 23-26 and the Pac-10 Diving Championships, Feb. 24-26.

Junior Rebecca Ejdervik, ranked 11th in the nation in the 100 breaststroke, will look to defend her title in event on Friday night. Ejdervik’s top time this season in the 100 breast is 1:00.04, two thousandths of a second faster than her Pac-10 Championship winning time last season.

Sun Devils Cassie Morrice and Caroline Kuczynski are also ranked in their respective events, along with three Arizona State Relays. Morrice is ranked fourth in the Pac-10 (20th in the NCAA) in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.81, while Kuczynski is ranked ninth in the Pac-10 (26th in the NCAA) in the 100 Fly with a time of 53.11.  Arizona State is also ranked in the 800 free, 200 and 400 medley relays.

With every other team gunning to overtake Arizona State, divers Riley McCormick, Constantin Blaha, and Elina Eggers event the competition as reigning Pac-10 Champions. The Olympic trio looks to come in and sweep the medalist honors once again for the Sun Devils.

McCormick, the 2010 Pac-10 Newcomer and Diver of the Year, took home the championship on the platform, with a conference-record score of 476.80. Blaha, who finished a close second in the 1-meter event, blew out the competition in the 3-meter dive to win the conference title. Junior Cameron Bradshaw finished second in the 3-meter event and looks this season to build on the momentum he gained by making the finals of the U.S. Winter Nationals in early February.

Eggers, who also won Pac-10 Newcomer accolades, was the only female diver to medal on each of the three championship events. The sophomore took home the title in the platform dive, but also finished second and third respectively in the 3-meter and 1-meter springboard events.

Results will be posted at the conclusion of competition each day at www.pac-10.org. The schedule of events is listed below.
