Davis named to Lombardi Award watch list

Arizona State University junior defensive end Dexter Davis has been named to the Watch List for the 2008 Rotary Lombardi Award, which is presented annually to the nation's best college football lineman or linebacker.

Davis has started all 26 games in his ASU career, and he has led the Sun Devils in sacks both seasons. In 2007, he tied for third in the Pacific-10 Conference with 10.5 sacks, and he also had 33 tackles, three forced fumbles and a pass break-up to earn Second-Team All-Pac-10 honors. In his two years at ASU, he has 73 tackles, 16.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Davis has also been named to the Watch List for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, for the best defensive player in college football, and the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.

The Lombardi Award's voting electorate is made up of the head coaches from all Division I schools, sports media personnel from across the country and former winners and finalists of the Award. The first round of voting is conducted in late September and early October, and a list of 12 semifinalists is released at the end of October.

That list will be narrowed to four finalists, and the winner be announced at the Rotary Lombardi Award Dinner on Dec. 10, 2008 in Houston.
