Carpenter, Reaves named athletes of the week
Quarterback Rudy Carpenter (football) and outside hitter Sarah Reaves (volleyball) have been selected as the Arizona State University Athletes of the Week for the week ending August 31. Both athletes played big roles in helping their respective squads to wins on the opening weekend play to earn the honor.
Carpenter powered the Sun Devils (1-0) to a 30-13 victory over intrastate rival Northern Arizona Saturday night inside Sun Devil Stadium, accumulating 388 yards on 22-for-28 passing (.786) with one touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 40 yards. The 300-plus performance by Carpenter was the 10th over his career, the best among active Pac-10 quarterbacks, and moved him past the 8,000 yard mark for his career with 8,386 yards, the 16th-best in Pac-10 history. During the first quarter, he connected on a 52-yard touchdown pass to Kerry Taylor for 66th touchdown pass of his career, placing him 11th on the Conference's all-time TD list and second all-time in school history behind only Andrew Walter's 85 scores.
Reaves led the ASU volleyball team to the ASU Sheraton Classic title last week with double-doubles in all three matches to help the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record in head coach Jason Watson's first matches at the helm of the program. She had 16 kills and 16 digs in the Sun Devils' 3-0 win over South Carolina on Aug. 29, and then she recorded 15 kills and 13 digs later that night in a loss to UNLV. She wrapped up a terrific opening weekend with 17 kills and 10 digs and she had the match-winning kill the third set of ASU's sweep of Dayton on Aug. 30. For the weekend, she finished with 46 total kills and her 4.10 kills per set average currently leads the Pac-10. Reaves was named to the All-Tournament Team along with fellow Sun Devil Margie Giordano for her play.
