Brett Wallace to play in Arizona Fall League's Rising Stars Showcase
Former Arizona State University baseball star Brett Wallace has been named to the Arizona Fall League's Rising Stars Showcase Game, which will take place on Friday, October 24 at Surprise Stadium.
Wallace, who is playing for the Peoria Saguaros in the fall league, was a first round pick (13th overall) of the St. Louis Cardinals in this past June's draft. He ranks second in ASU history with a .398 career batting average, and he is tied for fourth on the school's all-time list with 45 home runs. In his first year of pro ball, Wallace hit .337 with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBI in 54 combined games with the Class A Quad City River Bandits and the Class AA Springfield Cardinals.
The Rising Stars Showcase is the fall league's version of Major League Baseball's Futures Game, which leads off the annual All-Star Game festivities each July. Scouting and minor league directors of every organization selected the players for the Showcase Game, and each big league club will have at least one player in the game. Wallace is the third former Sun Devil to play in the Rising Stars Game, joining Travis Buck of the Oakland Athletics (2006) and Jeff Larish of the Detroit Tigers (2007). Both Buck and Larish went on to make their Major League debuts the following season after being selected for the Showcase Game.
