Baseball sweeps doubleheader
The No. 6 Arizona State University baseball team finished off a sweep of a doubleheader with a 14-1 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday in front of a crowd of 2,786 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 3-0 on the season with the victory, and it was their third straight game scoring more than 10 runs and collecting more than 10 hits.
Jason Kipnis had three hits while Carlos Ramirez and Zack MacPhee each had three RBI. Kipnis and Ramirez each hit solo home runs in the win, giving them both three home runs on the day.
Seth Blair gave the Sun Devils their third straight effective start on the mound. He went six innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out eight to earn the victory. R.J. Preach did not allow a hit in one inning of relief, and Jeeter Ishida, the 16th Sun Devil to make his collegiate debut this weekend, finished off the game with two shutout innings.
ASU jumped out to an early lead again, scoring five runs in the second inning on a three-run triple by MacPhee, an RBI double by Kipnis and an RBI single from Ramirez. Kipnis and Ramirez then both hit solo home runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0.
In the fifth, Raoul Torrez drove in a run with a double down the right field line, and Ramirez and Kole Calhoun each drew based loaded walks. The Panthers scored their only run of the game in the sixth, but ASU scored runs in each of the last three innings to secure the 14-1 victory.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
