Baseball edges Oregon

April 02, 2010

Drew Maggi's first career home run, a solo shot in the third inning, was all the offense that top-ranked Arizona State would need, as they extended their season-opening winning streak to 24 games in a 1-0 win over Oregon at PK Park. The win puts the Devils at 24-0, 4-0 in Pac-10 play. It was Arizona State's first 1-0 game since a win over Oregon State in Tempe on April 7, 2000.

Seth Blair (5-0) was magnificent for ASU on the mound, going seven shut out innings allowing only five hits while striking out five to earn the win. Mitchell Lambson pitched the eighth inning before giving way in the ninth to closer Jordan Swagerty. Neither allowed a hit, as Swagerty picked up his eighth save of the season.

Oregon starter Tyler Anderson was just as impressive as Blair, allowing only four hits while striking out 10 in a complete game. The only run he allowed was Maggi's homer, but it was enough to saddle Anderson with the hard-luck loss, dropping him to 4-3.

Maggi's dinger came with one away in the third, and the Sun Devils would muster only two other base runners the rest of the way against Anderson.

The Ducks made things interesting in the ninth, as they had the tying run at second with one out, but Swagerty was able to get a strike out and a ground out to end the game.

Kole Calhoun, Zach Wilson and Riccio Torrez joined Maggi as the only Sun Devils to collect a hit.

The Devils and Ducks continue their three-game Pac-10 series on Friday, Arpil 2. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. from PK Park.
