ASU's Yzaguirre receives MLK award

Raul Yzaguirre, executive director of the Center for Community Development and Civil Rights, and former president of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), is one of six recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. “Living the Dream” Award.

Yzaguirre was honored Jan. 12 with the other awardees at the 21st Annual MLK “Stand up for Justice” Awards Breakfast at the Phoenix Convention Center.

This award recognizes individuals who exemplify the ideals of King through their personal commitment to human relations and social justice. Yzaguirre joins a distinguished group of Phoenix residents who contribute significantly to creating a compassionate and socially just society.

Yzaguirre joined ASU in January 2005 after stepping down as president of NCLR and continues to advocate for social justice through the center's civic engagement programs as well as thought leadership of the Latino community. The Center for Community Development and Civil Rights is located in the College of Public Programs at the Downtown Phoenix campus.

The MLK Awards Breakfast is sponsored by the Arizona Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and supported by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission.
