ASU's Whiting selected as Pac-10 Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Ryan Whiting, a junior on the Arizona State University track and field team, has been selected as the Pac-10 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, the Conference announced Monday. Whiting was honored after winning the shot put and discus at the annual Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona that was held in Tempe over the weekend.
Whiting, the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Indoor Shot Put Champion, helped the Sun Devil men to a sweep of its instate rivals as he took the discus title with a mark of 60.32m (197-11), more than eight-feet past the second-place mark, and then went on to win the shot put with a national-leading toss of 20.41m (66-11.50). The only 20-meter throw of the season in the NCAA so far this year, Whiting also bettered his Dual record mark of 20.35m that he set in 2007 as a freshman. Along with his NCAA-leading shot put mark, Whiting currently stands second nationally in the discus (60.73m).
The weekly honor for Whiting is his first this season and the fourth for the Sun Devil program. He joins teammates Brandon Bethke (men’s track, April 20), Charonda Williams (women’s track, April 13) and Sarah Stevens (women’s field, April 13) as the other Sun Devils to be honored this season.
Two members of the men’s team will compete at the Pac-10 Multi Championships this weekend as the decathlon will be held in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday and Sunday. Whiting and the rest of his teammates will travel to Eugene for the remaining events of the Pac-10 Championships on May 16-17.
