ASU wrestling preps for international meets, UFC 100


<p>While the Arizona State University wrestlers are in the midst of summer vacation, several former Sun Devils have been busy in recent weeks and also have been preparing for events to come in the coming weeks. Here is the first install of the ASU Wrestling Summer Notebook:</p><separator></separator><p>CAMPBELL GOLDEN ONCE AGAIN - <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/campbell_kelsey00.html… Campbell</a>, who was a member of the Sun Devil squad each of the past two seasons, continued to make a name for herself on the mats in women’s freestyle as she traveled to Guelph, Canada, over the July 4 weekend and won gold in the 2009 Canada Cup. The 2009 U.S. Senior National Champion and runner-up at the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials, Campbell entered the 59kg (130 lbs.) weight class and won all three of her matches to win the international tournament. She opened the tournament with a win over Mirna Henriquez of Venezuela before downing Natascha Ballas of Germany in the semifinal. In the final, she defeated Deanna Rix of the U.S., the same opponent that defeated her in the World Team Trials on May 31.</p><separator></separator><p>FELIX PREPARING FOR WORLDS - Danny Felix, a 1995 All-American at 118 pounds for the Sun Devils, recently made headlines in the wrestling community as he won the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials and, at the age of 35, made his first U.S. National Team. On July 5, Felix and many of the other members of Team USA set out for Baku, Azerbaijan, to begin training for the 2009 World Championships (September 21-27 in Herning, Denmark). Along with their coach, former three-time All-American Sun Devil Zeke Jones, the Americans will train at the site of the 2007 World Championships before competing in the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix in Baku on July 19. Felix, who is competing at 55kg (121 lbs.), earned his place on the team by defeating U.S. Champion Nick Simmons, two bouts to one.</p><separator></separator><p>MIXED MARTIAL ARTS UPDATE - The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will hold its biggest event yet this weekend as UFC 100 is set for Saturday, July 11, inside the Mandalay Bay Resort Event Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Several championship bouts will take place to highlight the event that also will feature a pair of former Sun Devils in the octagon. First up will be <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/dollaway_cb00.html">C.B. Dollaway</a> (9-2-0), a 2006 graduate and All-American (184), taking on Tom Lawlor (5-1-0, 1NC) in a middleweight bout (185 pounds) on the undercard. Both fighters have found success after taking part in The Ultimate Fighter series with Dollaway finishing runner-up on season seven and Lawlor fighting in the finale of season eight. On the main card will be Dan Henderson (24-7-0), a former Sun Devil Olympian and former MMA champion in several organizations and weight classes. Henderson, who coached the U.S. team on TUF 9, will square off with TUF 9 Team UK coach Michael Bisping (18-1-0), the winner of TUF 3. Just like the Dollaway-Lawlor fight, the Henderson-Bisping fight will be held in the middleweight division (185).</p><separator></separator><!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE --></p>
