Alumni weekend brings fun as swim opens season

If there was a perfect way to start off the season with optimism and enthusiasm, the Alumni weekend for the Arizona State swim team exemplified the youthful spirit the Sun Devils needed to set the tone this year.

Starting with the 3rd Annual Swimming Gala, the team and guests celebrated the night with a Vegas themed fête filled with show girls, Las Vegas-style entertainment and some family friendly gaming. Held a the Tempe Mission Palms hotel, down the street from the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, the gala helped raise money to endow the Sun Devil swimming programs.

The following day, the current team welcomed back Alumni of varying decades from past ASU squads to race and compete. The meet, which started out standard enough with relays and current and former swimmers racing in 100s and 50s, soon took a jovial direction. Coaches began racing current swimmers, relays started swimming from both ends of the pool and even the now infamous fastskin swimsuit made an appearance. Interestingly that fastskin suit helped an alumni beat current team members by four seconds.

The Alumni weekend represented a fun moment of lightness for the Sun Devils, who host Airforce in its season opener on Friday, November 5 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
