Abdala, McKenna and Simmons advance to round of 32 at ITA Regionals


The Sun Devil Women's Tennis Team came out full throttle Thursday at the opening day of the ITA West Regionals as they saw Nadia Abdala,  Kelcy McKenna and freshman Sianna Simmons all advance to the round of 32 in singles as well as placing two teams in the round of 32 in the doubles bracket as well.

Singles started out strong for the Sun Devils as top-seed Kelcy McKenna took a first round bye before locking horns with Long Beach State's Lisa Sutton who she beat in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-3 win to enter the round of 32 where she'll face UCLA's Ali Walters tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Nadia Abdala came into the contest as the third seed, despite not seeing any playing time yet this fall due to illness, she took the first round bye and then a straight set win over UCLA's Jordan Dockendorf to enter the round of 32 where she'll set to face Arizona's Deborah Castany tomorrow at noon.

Freshman Sianna Simmons also came to play on Thursday as she locked up against the 16-seed, Katy Williams of UNLV in the round of 64, who she made quick work of with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win as well. Simmons will face tenth-seeded Hannah Grady of Long Beach State at high noon tomorrow.

Laila Abdala also entered the bracket ranked 17th, but was unable to advance past the round of 64 as she fell in a tough three-set loss to Arizona's Sarah Landsman, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Two doubles teams will also see the round of 32 tomorrow as the one-seed, Nadia and Laila Abdala and two-seed Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein saw a bye today and will kick-off action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

The ITA West Regional rolls on tomorrow with both singles and doubles action continuing throughout the day in San Diego, Calif.
