SCI awards CSE undergraduate research awards


<p>In an effort to support strong academic performance among SCI undergraduate students and to encourage interest in graduate studies, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering within the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI) offers a program to fund undergraduate research. Four top students were awarded this scholarship for the fall 2008 term. Nominating faculty members pledge to support the student with $1000 from their research budget and these funds are matched by SCI.</p><separator></separator><p>Temitope Akinwande, an Integrated BSE/MS student, will be working with Dr. Yi Chen on a project supporting keyword search on web data represented in XML.&nbsp;</p><separator></separator><p>Alan Hogan and Michael Pfeister, both juniors, will be working with Dr. Wei-Tek Tsai and Dr. Yinong Chen who states, &ldquo;In this project, software controlling and manipulating an industry robot will be developed in service-oriented paradigm, which allows seamless integration and evolution of the robot through independent developers in different locations and at different times.&rdquo;<br /> David Weber, a senior Computer Science student, will be working with Dr. Violet Syrotiuk and Dr. Huan Liu on a research project to identify communities within a communication network when those communities attempt to evade detection.&nbsp;</p><separator></separator><p>The Computer Science and Engineering department started the CSE Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Fall 2004 with six awards for the 2004-2005 academic year. Six students were awarded for the 2005-2006, five students for 2006-2007, and seven students for the 2007-2008 academic year. Students will showcase their research at the FURI Symposium on Friday, November 21st from 1-3 p.m. outside of Engineering Center, G-wing.</p><separator></separator><p>Fulton School of Engineering Awards SCI Students</p><separator></separator><p>The Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) has awarded nine SCI students funds to work on a research project with a supporting faculty member or graduate student.
