In recognition of its extraordinary global engagement efforts, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) recognized Arizona State University on Nov. 11 for its internationalization efforts. ASU received the Gold Level of APLU’s 2018 Institutional Award for Global Learning, Research & Engagement, which recognizes institutions that have excelled in one dimension of internationalization.
"ASU’s commitment to global engagement is embedded in our university charter, design aspirations and culture,” said Sethuraman Panchanathan, executive vice president of Knowledge Enterprise Development and chief research and innovation officer at ASU. “Consistent with our commitment to societal impact and lifelong learning, ASU’s impact includes diverse learners around the world and solving global grand challenges. We are committed to empowering our students and faculty through global partnerships.”
The overall award recognizes institutions with a demonstrated commitment to inclusivity, internationalization of research and engagement, leadership and pervasiveness and assessment.
“Global experience and collaboration is more important than ever,” APLU President Peter McPherson said. “We’re delighted to spotlight the exceptional example Florida State University has set in achieving comprehensive internationalization. We applaud Florida State as well as the University of Alberta, Arizona State University, and the University of South Carolina for their efforts to lead students and faculty in collaborating with, and learning from, their counterparts abroad.”
ASU has worked to vastly expand its research productivity in recent years. The university increased investment in global research, instruction and public service by 40 times since 2008. In the past five years, ASU has worked with more than 270 partners across more than 40 countries to generate solutions to global challenges such as water and food security. The university’s International Rule of Law and Security Program, jointly developed by the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and the McCain Institute for International Leadership, leverages faculty expertise to advance the rule of law, democracy and good governance across the globe.
