David Hickman

Arizona State University Regents' Professor of Music, David Hickman, has recently published the largest book ever written for the trumpet, "Trumpet Greats: A Biographical Dictionary," a 1,128-page work featuring biographies of more than 2,000 trumpet performers, teachers and instrument designers from 64 countries who have made important contributions to the profession since 1542. The book includes 2,513 photographs, several appendices and a 120-page index. Hickman began researching and writing the book four years ago. He solicited the help of two of the world's leading trumpet scholars, Dr. Michel Laplace from France and Dr. Edward H. Tarr from Germany, who became content editors for the project. Dr. Leonard A. Candelaria, Regents' Professor Emeritus in trumpet at the University of North Texas wrote the foreword.

The book received rave reviews during the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Grand Rapids, Mich., where Hickman presented two lectures on his research.

Before joining the ASU School of Music faculty in 1982, Hickman taught at the University of Illinois for eight years. He has published more than 40 articles, 200 editions of music and several textbooks. His 2006 book, "Trumpet Pedagogy: A Compendium of Modern Teaching Techniques," is a required text at more than 80 universities in the United States. For more information, contact David Hickman.
