Herberger College music faculty to present 14 public recitals in spring 2004


TEMPE, Ariz. – One of the best entertainment deals in the Valley returns to Arizona State University for spring 2004. The Faculty Artist Recital Series, presented by the Herberger College of Fine Arts, will present 14 concerts by top musicians playing a wide variety of instruments.

Two money-saving packages, together with low single ticket prices, make it easy for Valley music lovers to enjoy these professional performances. Faculty in the Herberger College School of Music, who appear as soloists or with prestigious ensembles all over the world, make ASU one of their tour stops.
Venues for the Faculty Artist Recital Series are the Katzin Concert Hall and Evelyn Smith Music Theatre, both of which are located in the Music Building at 40 E. Gammage Parkway on ASU’s main campus in Tempe.

Single tickets to recitals are $5 each and various packages reduce prices even more. The "Pick Six" package is $25, which is a $5 saving. The "Top Ten" package is $30, giving an even bigger saving of $20.

Martin Schuring, oboe, with a little help from his faculty friends, presents "The Year 1950." Selections include four works from about 1950: Britten'sSix Metamorphoses, Schuller's Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Canteloube's Rustiques for Reed Trio and Arnold's Sonatina. Schuring's friends are pianist Eckart Sellheim, clarinetist Robert Spring and bassoonist Jeffrey Lyman.

Pianist Jan Thompson, who is a member of The Kent Camerata, will perform with the group in this Faculty Artist Recital. Program selections include the music of Handel, Schumann, Brahms, Ravel, Pasatieri, Bridge and Faure. The Kent Camerata is a professional vocal/instrumental ensemble affiliated with Kent State University's Hugh A. Glauser School of Music. The unique group took its name and inspiration from the Florentine Camerata of the Renaissance. Since its debut tour in Italy in 1995, The Kent Camerata has performed throughout the world.

“ Double Reeds Can't Dance?” Last year, bassoonist Jeffrey Lyman brought music from the cafes of Paris, and now he's back home digging up bassoon music from jazz clubs, cocktail lounges, and even rock and roll radio. From Chick Corea's Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano to a Latin rock etude by Bill Douglas, Lyman and several colleagues will get their groove on in this laid-back evening.
