ASU Herberger Mainstage Lyric Opera Theatre sponsored by The Harris presents a Donizetti opera comica

Tempe, Ariz. – It’s Donizetti at his comic best! Don’t miss the award-winning ASU Lyric Opera Theatre’s production of The Elixir of Love.

Donizetti was just 35 when he wrote The Elixir of Love. Depending on the source, he completed it in either two weeks or 10 weeks, either of which is an accomplishments. The opera comica features a happy ending, thanks to the realization of the true feelings of the characters: a simple village lad, a beautiful country girl, a swaggering sergeant and a quack doctor.

The Elixir of Love’s first performance was in May 12, 1832. It was an instant success, and has remained in the standard repertoire ever since its composition. Through the years, opera critics have admired the subtle changes from buffa to seria style, and the emotional music. Donizetti’s radiant score brims with color and charm, and contains the beautiful tenor aria, “A Furtive Tear.”

Performances are Nov. 19 and 20, and Dec. 1, 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 21. Performances will be in the Evelyn Smith Music Theatre located in the Music Building on the ASU Tempe campus, 40 E. Gammage Parkway. Single tickets range in price from $5 to $20.
