ASU 2004 Spring Dance Program for Children ages 24 months-18 years


WHAT: The Herberger College Department of Dance at ASU invites children ages 24 months to 18 years-old to explore the world of dance – and one of the nation's top-ranked dance programs – through a variety of innovative and exciting dance classes.

Moving Inventors is an ASU program designed for introducing diverse dance styles to the surrounding community. Children will be able to work with experienced and caring dance teachers. Each class will emphasize anatomically sound technique, dynamic choreographic and performance training, and caring, individualized instruction.

WHEN: There are two, 10-week sessions that each child may register for:
               Session A: January 9-March 18 (10 weeks) 
               Session B: March 23-May 29 (10 weeks)

WHERE: Classes will be held in ASU’s Physical Education Building East, Room 190, on the ASU campus in Tempe. Metered parking is available just outside the dance studio.

COST: Tuition ranges from $120 to $200. Scholarships are available.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

K’Motion, $120
Ages 3-5, Thursdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. 
Session A: Jan 15-March 18 
Session B: March 25-May 27
Soar, Roar and Explore. K’Motion is designed for children ages 3-5 to discover the world of creative dance. Dynamic activities instruct and engage youngsters. The class supports the development of physical dexterity, coordination, cooperative problem-solving and creative self-expression.

Dance Together, $120
Ages 24-42 months, Tuesdays, 10:30-11:20 a.m. 
Session A: Jan 13- March 16
Session B: March 23-May 25th
Dance Together is designed to delight and engage the active child in all of us. Parents dance, create, play, and sing with their children in this 50-minute movement celebration. Activities are designed to stimulate physical and social development, coordination and loco-motor patterning essential for later success in school. Together we will skip, fly, whirl, and twirl with expressive movement.

Moving Inventors Dance Arts, $200
Ages 5-8, Saturdays, 8:45-10:45 a.m. 
Session A: Jan 10- March 13 
Session B: March 27-May 29
Moving Inventors dance arts is geared for kids ages 5-8 that are curious and full of energy. This two-hour class celebrates art as a creative process. Stimulating activities are designed to encourage inventive exploration. Previous themes include Color Dance: light, shadow, hue and Globetrotters: expeditions around the world. The class features creative dance, artistic expression, stories, music, crafts and more.

Hip Hop and Break for Boys, $190
Ages 7-11, Fridays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. 
Session A: Jan 9-March 12 
Session B: March 26-May 28
Come get your groove on. Our Hip Hop for Boys class is the ultimate dance scene. Boys will enjoy popping, locking, and vigorous choreography to the latest Pop and Hip Hop hits. All dance moves are taught in a clear step-by-step progression for success. Individuality, musicality, and athletic safety are addressed. Get ready for an action-packed Hip Hop and Break dance class that moves and grooves.

Athletic Hip Hop, Break, Pop & Lock, $190 
Ages 14 -18, Fridays, 4:30-6:30 p.m. 
Session A: Jan 9-March 12 
Session B: March 26-May 28
Express yourself with air poses and learn how to up rock, floor rock, pop, and lock. Athletic Hip Hop is designed for active students who want to learn the foundations of breakdancing, popping and locking put into fun and athletic routines. From this class students will gain an appreciation for hip hop culture and this dynamic dance style. Taught by an experienced professional instructor, this class emphasizes energy, flexibility and freestyle dancing. Some dance experience recommended.

Afro Beat, $120
Ages 8 -12, Saturdays, 10:45-11:45 a.m. 
Session A: Jan 10-March. 13
Session B: March 27-May 29
Afro Beat is a class where students can explore the exciting music and energetic movement of Zairian culture. Afro Beat encourages students to express themselves through vibrant rhythms and sensational choreography. Instruction will foster a non-competitive community where self-expression and individuality is applauded. Come travel around the world through the music and dance of Africa.

On the Move, $150
High School Students, Saturdays, 11:45-1:15 a.m. 
Session A: Jan 10-March 13 
Session B: March 27-May 29
On the Move classes are designed for high school students ready to advance their dance skills to the next level. Classes emphasize the development of dance skills through anatomically sound technique and dynamic choreography. Participants will join the On the Move Dance Company and perform at concerts and festivals in the Phoenix metro area.
