The ASU Herberger Institute School of Art presents the Phoenix Transect photographic exhibition, Oct. 19 – Nov. 19, at the Northlight Gallery on the ASU Tempe campus. The exhibition features a culmination of work completed from 2007–09 by ASU undergraduate and graduate students. A public reception also is being held Oct. 26. Join the photographers and scientists represented in the Phoenix Transect exhibition during a discussion of their work on Nov. 9. Mark Klett, Regents’ Professor of Photography, joins the students involved in the exhibition to discuss their collaborative process and the continuing evolution of the project.

Led by Klett, the Phoenix Transect is a research project undertaken by the field class in photography at the ASU Herberger Institute School of Art. Project participants are visual artists and natural and social scientists who worked in collaboration to explore growth and changes spanning the Papago Buttes to the modern light-rail transit system in the larger Phoenix Metropolitan area, its urban and outlying spaces, its people, natural environments and resources. Images depict the once mighty Salt River’s enduring but fragile riparian areas and the even more fragile lives of homeowners threatened with foreclosure.

The exhibition explores the traditional photographic boundaries between documentary and expressive practices, while it examines new media for visualization and promotes interdisciplinary perspectives. When seen together, the combined fieldwork of many years can be seen as a larger survey creating a detailed portrait of the Phoenix metro area evolving over time. The Northlight Gallery is located in room 101 in Matthews Hall on the southeast corner of Tyler and Forest Malls on the ASU Tempe campus.
