What
The Nathan Cummings Travel Show is an exhibition by ASU School of Art graduate students who competed in this year’s Nathan Cummings Foundation annual Summer Travel Fellowship competition.
Art works by the three winners of this year’s Summer Travel Fellowship competition: Kelsey Viola Wiskirchen, David Adams and Benjamin Phillips, plus works by graduate students who also participated in the competition: Andrew Hadle, Stephen Gittins, Emily Stergar, Ann Morton, Patrick Vincent, Lizeth Garcia, Katie Poterala and Laurie Minnick are showcased in The Nathan Cummings Travel Show.
The experience of The Grand Tour has long been an established tradition in the education of the whole person; it was seen as an educational rite of passage and traditionally involved travel through Europe. For the visual artist, it has been a virtual necessity rather than a tradition. The benefits accrued by the young American artist through this experience have been well documented in modern art history.
Through the support and generosity of the Nathan Cummings Foundation the School of Art offers an annual Summer Travel Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded for the purpose of enabling a current Master of Fine Arts candidate to travel during the summer between passing the 15-hour review and preparing for the thesis exhibition. The fellowship is awarded to students whose work and written statement best exemplifies the intent of The Grand Tour.

The Nathan Cummings Foundation owes its existence and inspiration to Nathan Cummings, who rose from impoverished beginnings to become the founder and guiding force of the Sara Lee Corporation. In his later years, he was a perceptive art collector and a generous philanthropist. He inherited a spirit of sharing and a sense of community from his immigrant parents and transmitted these values to his children and grandchildren, who now contribute their time and energy to the Foundation.
The Night Gallery is a community outreach gallery displaying works by ASU School of Art graduate students, faculty and alumni that embraces the role a university can play in the off-campus community. Night Gallery is a constantly changing, 3,800 square-foot exhibition and experimental art space made possible through a partnership between Vestar Development Company and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Unique performances including music, dance, readings, theater and video also are staged at the Night Gallery.

The Night Gallery is located at the Tempe Marketplace, 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ. The gallery is on the west end and south side of “The District” between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Aeropostale.
