What
The ASU Herberger Institute School of Art presents Matthew Mosher’s conceptual solo exhibition, The Gallery is No Place for Artists, Aug. 23–27.
Hosted in the school’s Step Gallery, Mosher’s installation challenges the role of the traditional commercial gallery. In his first solo exhibition at ASU, Mosher boarded up the glass façade of the Step Gallery, leaving only a small peephole, through which viewers can view the space. Mosher’s exhibition illustrates recent evolutions in art making and art marketing. As artists push deeper into the digital age, using techniques like projection, performance, audio, and the Internet, Mosher feels their work seems to grow harder to sell by traditional galleries. He believes that artists need to continue adapting to a changing world and challenge galleries to develop strategies for selling work that is less and less tangible.
